NUR531 - Indigenous Health and Social Justice

In this unit students critically reflect on the impact of colonisation and social trauma on health-related decision-making and their own positioning as a nurse to analyse the impact of their cultural values and beliefs on nursing practice.
Fundamental to providing nursing care in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the notions of respect for indigenous knowledge, cultural safety and the need to work in a genuine partnership to support health-related choices. To achieve this the unit draws on a strength-based approach to engage with the person, family and community and critically examines solution-focused models to prepare nurses to provide culturally appropriate care building on the strengths of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
