NUR534 - Primary Health Care
This unit will support students to develop evidence-based knowledge and skills in primary health care and a critical understanding of primary health care frameworks and their implications for professional practice. Primary health care is a fundamental part of effective care across the lifespan in community settings. Using a strengths-based approach, students will apply critical thinking skills to develop culturally safe primary health care for individuals, families, groups and communities. Health promotion, disease and illness prevention, rehabilitation and palliative care are important components of primary health care delivery.
Students will critically examine the differences between deficit and strengths-based approaches in the delivery of primary health care, the interrelation of priorities in global and national frameworks, global sustainable development goals and different national health strategies, and the potential or actual impact of these on the health and wellbeing of Australian communities including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations. The role of communities in developing health strategies will be critically reviewed. Approaches to delivery systems (such as Primary Health Networks), safety and quality standards, the role of 'big data', e-health and health workforce development will also be critically examined.
