NUR539 - Contemporary Nursing Practice 1

This unit will support students to develop evidence-based knowledge and skills in relation to long term conditions and aged care, and a critical understanding of healthy ageing and frameworks for aged care and long term conditions, and their implications for professional practice. Using a strengths-based approach, students will apply critical thinking skills to
develop evidence-informed, culturally safe, appropriate care for people with long term conditions and for older individuals, whether living independently, with support of families and communities, or in aged care facilities. Students will critically examine local and global approaches to healthy ageing and aged care, the impact ageism can have on decision-making related to healthcare, and the health strategies and priorities regarding provision of services for long term conditions. They will critically analyse factors affecting healthy ageing and long term conditions and the way local, national and global initiatives address these. The support of healthy ageing and service provision for the prevention and treatment of long term conditions for particular groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, will also be critiqued against quality standards. Nurses' responsibility in promoting healthy ageing is also an opportunity for leadership in countering ageism, developing innovative approaches and advocating for community engagement in planning, delivering and evaluating new services and initiatives. Students will critically reflect on their leadership role in these, in future practice and professional contexts.
