NUR540 Research For Healthcare Practice

This unit prepares students to locate, understand, analyse, critique and synthesise research evidence in order to evaluate its translation into practice. Nurses use research evidence to support and critically review their practice and to advocate for appropriate practice change. Different models of research translation and evidence-based practice can be used for this purpose, which take account of the individual's specific needs as well as service resources. Students will critique these models in relation to the way they can contribute to effective practice delivery. They will develop skills in designing an evidence framework to support advocating for a change in practice.

To understand the nature of research evidence, students will examine different research methodologies, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander models of knowledge generation, and evaluate their usefulness in generating evidence for practice or for contributing to the resolution of professional issues. Other forms of evidence will be critiqued in relation to evidence from research. The unit will support students to develop knowledge and skills in using research in their practice, as appropriate in different practice contexts.
