POL321 Comparative Politics of South East Asia

POL221 Comparative Politics of Southeast Asia provides a cross-country analysis of the political systems and political dynamics of the eleven states of Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam). It takes a state-in-society approach explaining how governing elites work within regimes that mediate between the state and society. Its central themes are the comparative study of transitions to democracy in the region and the capacity of the regimes of new states to effectively govern.
