POL372 Contemporary Global Issues

This unit explores some of the most significant issues facing the world today. Current topics are discussed and may include issues relating to climate change, financial or economic crises, infectious diseases, energy security, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, human overpopulation, global poverty, aid and development, food and water security, armed conflicts, transnational organised crime, and international terrorism. These topics are examined within the context of supranational governance structures, transnational corporations, and intergovernmental or nongovernmental organizations. Students will investigate the interconnections between social, cultural, political, and economic institutions to better understand why certain issues dominate global politics while others are ignored. In this unit students will consolidate advanced research and writing skills through independent research essays and comparative case studies.
