This unit is designed to provide a foundation in statistical thinking as applied to decision making in a multi-disciplinary context. The aims of the unit are to:
(a) introduce the basic concepts of data handling and statistical analysis including some considerations of sampling theory,
(b) introduce the concept of probability and to consider the applications of several probability distributions to the solution of problems,
(c) draw statistical conclusions about a population based on a sample of data, (d) to use a calculator to perform statistical calculations.
