Most human service work is practiced in an organisational setting. In order to work effectively, workers need to understand organisational contexts, structures and processes and reflect on the impact these have on practice. This unit explores organisational theory and structure and research knowledge about organisations as a basis for assessing, understanding and working in human service organisations. The overall aim of the unit is to provide an understanding of the nature of organisations, the specific characteristics of human service organisations and the current themes, issues and challenges confronting the human service workers in these organisations.
