SWK521 - Analysing Social Work Foundations

This unit introduces students to the profession of social work and provides core knowledge and values required to practice social work in Australia. Students explore the purpose, function and role of social work within contemporary society with a focus on understanding human rights and social justice. Core social work theories, models and practice methods will be examined, such as case management, counselling, group work, advocacy, community development and social activism. The impact of institutional racism and the role of social work towards First Nations Peoples in Australia will be critiqued. The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) Code of Ethics will be examined in relation to principles of duty of care and dignity of risk, and individual rights and social responsibility.

The compulsory 5-day face-to-face intensive provides a forum for experiential learning and interpersonal skill development. Student attendance during the on-campus teaching block is compulsory to meet the Australian Association of Social Workers accreditation standards. Students who do not attend and engage every day will not pass this unit. Students are responsible for arranging travel and accommodation to attend the intensive week.
