ECM201 Teaching the Curriculum: Junior Secondary Science

In this unit pre-service teachers will develop specialised pedagogical knowledge and skills to demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of student learning in junior secondary science. The unit combines contemporary science educational theory to challenge existing understandings of the concepts and processes of teaching and learning of junior science using the Australian Curriculum Science: Understanding in disciplines of Biological, Chemical, Physical and Earth & Space sciences. Pre-service teachers will demonstrate student-centred and inquiry-based approaches to science learning through the design of contextually engaging learning sequences, including risk assessment, experimental investigations, formative and summative assessment, and the use of technologies to engage students in science classrooms.
